Lights, camera, action: The star looked every inch the film director as she framed a shot with her hand and shouted instructions through a megaphone while holding a remote LCD panel on the set of her movie W.E. in New York

She's Desperately Seeking to be taken seriously as a film director - and now Madonna is even using the old cliche of pretending to use her hand as a camera lens to convince onlookers she's the real deal.

The 52-year-old star was snapped making the silly hand gesture yesterday whilst filming her new movie W.E. on the streets of New York - and even used a loud hailer to make her point.

However, those on set have yet to spy a fold-up chair with her name emblazoned on the back...

What's my motivation?: The singer gives some bizarre-looking instructions on set to Abbie Cornish, who plays one of the lead characters in the movie

Madonna was also sporting another of her eccentric yet dowdy on-set outfits, perhaps to give herself the air of an auteur.

This time round, the singer was sporting a baseball cap, what appears to be her favourite black long-line knitted cardigan, baggy black side-zipped tracksuit bottoms and black sneakers.

She accessorised with sunglasses and a printed scarf.

She also appeared to be acting out the way the cast should play scenes, as well as moving a pot plant that didn't appear to be quite where she wanted it.

Brooklyn in NYC is the third location for the singer's second feature film, which has already seen her shoot in Paris and London.

Places please: The singer moves a potted plant to make way for a lampshade as she attends to the mise-en-scène, as they say in the movies

We're rolling: The Desperately Seeking Susan star now prefers to be behind the camera - at least for now

Thirsty work: Madonna clutches a can of drink as she oversees the action

The £18million movie is a two-tiered romantic drama based around the affair between King Edward VIII and American divorcée Wallis Simpson, spliced with contemporary romance between a divorcee and a Russian security guard.

It features Bright Star actress Abbie Cornish as the recently divorced Wally Winthrop and Oscar Isaac as the Russian Evgeni.

The cast also includes Natalie Dormer as Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who went on to be the Queen Mother, Richard Coyle as William, Billy Piper's husband Laurence Fox as Bertie, his father James Fox as King George V and James D'Arcy as King Edward VIII.

Like a prayer: Kabbalist Madonna gives some men playing Orthodox Jews their instructions for a scene

Andrea Riseborough plays Wallis and Madonna's daughter Lourdes also has a bit part in the movie, appearing under the name Lola Leon.

Madonna appears to be putting herself under an incredible amount of pressure just making the movie however, not just because her feature debut Filth And Wisdom got a total slating.

Talking to Interview magazine this month, she said: 'When you make a movie, it seems like there's nothing but resistance.'

Plaits, hats and flats: Some of the outfits Madonna has worn whilst filming

She continued: 'It's kind of a miracle that any movie ever gets made. Every other day, it's like, "What am I doing? This is insane. I could be off gardening right now. This is too stressful.

'Who do I think I am? Why am I putting myself through all of this punishment?" That's what it feels like-for me, anyway.'

Whether or not the Material Girl's efforts are worthwhile and indeed people will take her seriously as a director will become apparent when the movie is released next year.
