Silver style: Kristen McMenamy and her striking hair which she recently displayed on the cover of Vogue

For men, it is a mark of distinction. For women, it is often seen as ageing, unflattering and unfashionable.

But model Kristen McMenamy is determined to make grey hair groovy.

The 45-year-old has broken one of fashion's last taboos by appearing on the cover of a magazine with her striking silver locks proudly on display.

The mother-of-three, who is American but lives in London, said: 'You can get older and still be rock 'n' roll. I thought all that grey hair would make a beautiful picture.'

The shots appear in the current edition of Dazed and Confused, and Miss McMenamy also flaunts her grey mane in the August issue of Vogue.

Despite working in an industry obsessed with youth, the model is said to have stopped colouring her hair six years ago, telling Vogue: 'You've got to keep moving forward.'

Fashionistas have hailed her latest photo shoots as a 'backlash to the eternal quest for anti-ageing'.

Nicola Moulton, beauty and health director at UK Vogue, said grey hair doesn't stop a woman looking beautiful - but 'on the contrary, it just makes her look more attractive by speaking volumes for her confidence'.

Even the National Federation of Women's Institutes has stepped into the debate, saying it is encouraged to see 'more varied images of women.'

Younger women such as Kelly Osbourne have also 'gone grey' recently, albeit with the aid of hair dye for fashion purposes. But it remains to be seen if grey hair will become a permanent fixture on the fashion scene.

Miss McMenamy is no stranger to breaking style ba
rriers. In the mid-1990s, when she was earning £20,000 a day, she spearheaded a new look on the world's catwalks with her signature shaved eyebrows and cropped hair.

Dazed and Confused describe her as 'notoriously irreverent' and the model who 'helped overturn every tired beauty cliche and made way for a whole new generation of girls who didn't fit the mould'.

And it is not the first time Miss McMenamy has turned heads with her long grey locks, either.

Earlier this year, the audience gasped when she took to the catwalk at a fashion show for Calvin Klein in New York sporting a shiny and sleek head of silvery hair.
