Spiritual: Julia films a scene in a Hindu temple for her new film Eat, Pray, Love, during which she is believed to have converted to the religion

She was born to a Baptist and Catholic couple in the Bible Belt of the United States.

But Julia Roberts has revealed that she is now a practising Hindu after filming her new movie in India and Bali.

The actress, 42, is believed to have converted to the religion while shooting her upcoming release Eat, Pray and Love.

In the movie, based on the best-selling book by Elizabeth Gilbert, Roberts plays a recently-divorced woman travelling the world trying to find herself.

The character visits Italy for food, India for spirituality and Bali, where she finds love.

Speaking to the September issue of Elle magazine, Roberts said she now goes to temple to 'chant, pray and celebrate'.

She also revealed that she and cameraman husband Daniel Moder take their three children - Hazel, Phinnaeus and Henry- there to worship on a regular basis.

And she added that she hopes to be reincarnated as 'something quiet' after the stresses of her celebrity lifestyle.

She said: 'I'm definitely a practising Hindu. Golly, I've been so spoiled with my friends and family in this life. Next time I want to be just something quiet and supporting.'

But Roberts angered Hindu villagers while filming in India after they were barred from celebrating one of their most important religious festivals while the actress shot scenes in their temple.

The locals were hoping to celebrate the beginning of Navratri, nine days of worship of their Goddess Durga at Ashram Hari Mandir, close to Delhi, but instead found their temple sealed by Roberts's vast security team of 350 guards, bulletproof cars and a helicopter.

Eat, Pray, Love, the screen adaptation of the bestselling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert, will be released in Britain later this year.
