Amazing transformation: Brand bares his belly as he walks to the set of his new film Arthur, before donning the top half of the suit to show off impressive abs

Holy ab transformation, Batman! Russell Brand showed a rippling midsection as he filmed his new movie, Arthur, in New York, but sadly for the comic the toned muscles in question were made out of plastic.

Brand cut a remarkably less swoon-inducing figure as he walked to the set with the tight black outfit unzipped to the waist.

Arthur is a remake of the 1981 film starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli about a drunk who has to marry a well-to-do women he has no interest in so he will inherit his family's fortune, but finds himself falling for another women.

Brand is joined by Jennifer Garner, Dame Helen Mirren and Nick Nolte in the movie, which is currently filming in Manhattan.

It follows his breakout performances as rock star Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek.

Thirsty work for a superhero: Brand sips some water as Arthur, saving the harder liquor in his utility belt for later

Another of Brand's films - animated comedy Despicable Me, in which he teams up with Steve Carell and Forgetting Sarah Marshall co-star Jason Segel - opens later this year.

It's not the first time Brand has dressed up for the role, last week he was seen in bright yellow sunglasses and a comedy beard as he filmed scenes with Mirren, 64, who plays his chauffeur.

Modest transport: Brand arrived on set thanks top a more modest form of transport than his character's vehicle

Her part is based on the role that earned Sir John Gielgud an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the original.

Brand and Mirren previously worked together on The Tempest.
