National pride: Parade king Marc Anthony and his wife Jennifer Lopez make their way up Fifth Avenue during the Puerto Rican Day parade in New York

Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony were the King and Queen of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York - but their transport was anything but regal.

The pair's appearance was marred when the vintage convertible car that was ferrying them through the city broke down.

And the only replacement that could be found at short notice was a humble golf buggy.

Fit for a king: The couple were driven in a white classic convertible Chevy Impala with white leather seats

Car malfunction: But the car the pair rode in broke down as they stopped for a television interview

The pair cruised the streets in a chauffeur-driven classic Chevy Impala, but after leaving the vehicle for a quick TV interview the couple returned to find the battery had broken down.

After failing to restart the car, quick-thinking organisers set the couple up in a golf cart so Anthony was able to drive his wife the rest of the way along the parade route.

Rafael Dominguez, one of the parade's board of directors, told the New York Post: 'Marc and Jennifer were not fazed at all.

'What was so funny was how Marc handled it and how easily he drove the buggy. This is a man who must love to golf.'

J-Lo waved her parents' national flag with undisguised pride as she and husband Marc rode in the back seat of the limousine - and later buggy.

Revellers spilled out onto the streets to photograph the couple, blocking the roads.

Jennifer, the mother of twins, showed off her slim figure in a strapless white dress.

Underneath she wore a black bra. While an unusual look, the bra prevented her from any accidental flashes of flesh due to her energetic waving. Anthony wore a sash declaring him King Of the Parade.

Sharing a kiss: The couple were the centre of attention

Like his wife, the singer/songwriter is the son of Puerto Rican immigrants.

Jennifer grew up in the Bronx with her parents Guadalupe (née Rodríguez), a kindergarten teacher, and David Lopez, a computer specialist, who were both born in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Anthony was also born in New York, to Guillermina, a housewife, and Felipe Muñiz, a musician and hospital lunchroom worker.

Royalty: The couple revelled in the carnival atmosphere

Last week Jennifer stole the show at the MTV Movie Awards with her hip-hop dance with actor Tom Cruise.

She gushed about the experience.

'I'm such a hard worker, and I'm kind of intense about my job. It's great to work with someone who is just as intense and passionate and crazy about getting everything right, she said.

'[Cruise] called me a month before and said, "I have this idea. I'm doing this thing for the MTV Movie Awards, and I want it to be a surprise",' she told Extra.

Support: Sean 'Diddy' Combs flew the flag for Puerto Rico, and managed to avoid his ex girlfriend Jennifer Lopez

Cruise performed in character as Les Grossman.

'The thing with that routine is that it is one of the hardest routines. But he did it. He really, really did it.

'And he did a great job. I was really proud of him.

Lopez also denied reports that she and Anthony had renewed their wedding vows.
'We didn't. This is an absolute lie,' The Back-Up Plan star said.

'We just had our anniversary and had some people over to the house.'

'Maybe we will one day...' she added.

The body: Jennifer looked back to her curvy best in a stunning body-hugging dress as she attended the Apollo Theatre's Spring 2010 Benefit Concert & Awards Ceremony the day after the parade

Stylish: The singer put her curves on show in the metallic confection
