Slash-tastic: Those who weren't interested in watching the football were treated to performances from artists including Slash among others

Thousands of music lovers at Glastonbury Festival today joined forces to watch England's World Cup humiliating 4-1 defeat against Germany.

But for those who were more interested in music than football, there was an alternative form of entertainment over on the Pyramid Stage - in the form of Guns n'Roses guitarist Slash.

The 44-year-old musician, who wore a top hat, black and red trousers and a white T-shirt, got the crowds going as he performed alongside Myles Kennedy.

One festival-goer explained: 'I came here to see bands, that's why you go to Glastonbury. It's not that I'm not interested in football, but I came here for the music.'

However, that was not the mentality of every Glastonbury-goer, as many opted to watch the World Cup match on giant screens that had been specially set up for the occasion in two designated fields.

And while England's defeat left many people upset and withdrawn, thoughts of football were quickly pushed to the back of their minds with a nighttime lineup which included Faithless and headliner Stevie Wonder.

Atmosphere: There was jubilation among crowds when Frank Lampard scored, only to be replaced with shock when the goal was disallowed

The Motown legend took to the stage as the 40th anniversary festival, and one of the hottest to date, drew to a close.

Wonder, who has won more Grammy Awards than any other male solo artist, was a hit with both young and old proving his popularity spans the generations.

As well as performing classic hits including Higher Ground and If You Really Love Me, Wonder included the crowd in a quick rendition of Alicia Keys' Empire State of Mind.

Festival organiser Michael Eavis joined Wonder on stage as he sang his hit Happy Birthday in honour of the festival turning 40.

Eavis even took to the microphone himself but the view in the crowd was he should stick to his day job - dairy farmer and party host.

Earlier festival organiser Michael Eavis hailed this year's Glastonbury as the hottest ever.

He said: 'I have not seen one person drunk - more than 100,000 and not one person. They have been civilised.

'This is the hottest Glastonbury ever. I hope not too hot. But getting nice weather makes such a big difference.'

Asked if Prince Charles' visit to the site, near Pilton, Somerset, on Thursday confirmed Glastonbury as part of the establishment he smiled and said: 'Non-conformity is the name of the game as far as I am concerned.'

But the 74-year-old would not be drawn on calls for him to be knighted.

And as the sun set on a glorious Glastonbury weekend, Faithless rolled out their hits for a massive Pyramid Stage crowd.

Maxi Jazz, Sister Bliss and Rollo became festival favourites after their now fabled 2002 Glasto performance.

And tonight hits including God is a DJ and Insomnia had their fans just as enthralled.

Jazz said: 'Glastonbury you are amazing. I am so glad I got to see you this time in the sunshine.'

Full of hot air: Paloma Faith arrived on stage in an outfit which consisted of a parachute harness with balloons

Near the front of the stage the now famous Glastonbury flags were in full flutter for Faithless.

Other performers throughout the day included Norah Jones and Paloma Faith, who wore an incredible outfit of nude leotard, matching suspenders and a bizarre parachute style harness with attached balloons.

Glastonbury has also experienced a downfall in crime since last year, with only 345 reported crimes on site - down from 363 last year. There had been 112 arrests.

The medical team have treated 2,955 people - most for sun stroke in the incredibly hot weather.
