Battle of the barbecues: Alex Curran (left, seen today wearing a USA T-shirt in Liverpool, despite England's match on Saturday being against the U.S.) and Coleen Rooney are both planning to host parties to celebrate the World Cup

It's the most highly-anticipated sporting events of the year.

But while the England team are preparing for the competition of their lives at the World Cup in South Africa, their wives are also getting ready for their own contest - the battle of the barbeques.

Both Coleen Rooney, who is married to Wayne Rooney, and Alex Curran, whose husband is Steven Gerrard, are planning to host huge World Cup barbecues to support their spouses from the comfort of their home country.

While both of the WAGs have made it seem as though it was their decision not to fly out to South Africa to support the boys, it was reported earlier this year that England manager Fabio Capello had banned any wives or girlfriends from seeing their partners any more than once a week.

However, Coleen, who has already had a marquee set up in the garden of the Prestbury, Cheshire home she shares with Wayne in preparation for her World Cup bash, said she will fly out to South Africa if England reach the semi-finals.

Coleen, who gave birth to son Kai last November, said: 'I'm looking forward to being in England for the World Cup this year, it's going to be an amazing atmosphere.

'I love the idea of being with all of mine and Wayne's friends and family cheering him on, especially with Kai here.'

Party time: Alex Curran is also planning to host a party at her house in Merseyside

Alex, who stepped out for lunch in Liverpool yesterday in a military jacket and skinny jeans combination, is also planning to stay in England.

And, like Coleen, she will fly to South Africa if the team get to the semis on 6 July.

Mother-of-two Alex said: 'I am so proud of Steven and can’t wait for the first match, at the same time its hugely nerve wracking as this is a massive opportunity for him.

'I am not going out to South Africa yet as the girls are in school and it’s a long way away to leave them behind for so long.

'I will watch the matches at home with the girls and the rest of our friends and family.'

She added last week: 'If the boys make it to the quarter finals, I'll be straight on a plane to South Africa to cheer them on.'

Charity work: Victora Beckham, seen leaving her London hotel yesterday, is planning to visit underprivileged children in South Africa during the World Cup

Trendy: The fashion designer wore a navy blue shirt printed with swallows

However, Victoria Beckham is planning to fly out South Africa with the couple's three sons for the tournament, which her husband David will be writing about rather than playing in thanks to an Achilles injury.

But while she will be in the centre of the action, Victoria won't spend all her time watching the football, and is planning to spend the majority of her time visiting underprivileged children in the country.

She is also refusing to stay in the six-star Palace Hotel with the rest of the England team's wives and girlfriends, and has instead rented a luxury flat in Cape Town's Camps Bay.
