PERFECT PRESSIES

By Lara Sargent

Glowing gifts: Candle holders and crystal tealights, from £12, BHS, 0845 196 0000 or bhs.co.uk

Even though it is only a week until the big day, you don't need to panic - with late-night openings and online shopping, there's still time to splurge on last-minute pressies.

If you're struggling for ideas, buying something pretty, witty or downright practical for the home is always welcome. And with this year's credit crunch still in full throttle, interiors gifts can be cheap, cheerful and long-lasting - in fact, all our suggestions here are £50 or under.

'We've been pleasantly surprised by how robust the sales of interiors products have remained,' says Craig Price of The Contemporary Home. 'If anything, it's up on last Christmas.'

There's a huge choice of home-inspired presents, catering for all tastes and all budgets. For cooks and foodies, seek out vintage floral mugs and cake stands from Cath Kidston, frilly aprons and retro teapots from The Contemporary Home and almost anything from Jamie Oliver's Jme collection (jamieoliver.com).

For the green-fingered, try pretty gardening gloves, herb pots, trugs, tins of twine, lanterns and birdhouses from the likes of Cox & Cox, John Lewis and Lakeland.

With craft-inspired goodies, you'll hit the make-do-and-mend spirit. Why not buy your nearest and dearest a gorgeous sewing basket, knitting kit or DIY photobook?

'There's an obvious shift towards buying gifts and decorations that have a purpose and are reusable,' adds Price at TCH. 'Things such as cutlery, aprons, watches and wooden nativity sets are all selling extremely well.'

Of course, presents shouldn't be too worthy or practical. Think girlie, satin and sequined cushions for the boudoir, beautiful antique perfume decanters and fluffy hot water bottles.

For me, it has to be a Diptyque Tuberose candle from Cologne & Cotton (£35 and worth every penny).
