Where are all my followers? Justin Bieber Twittered that he 'was no longer popular' after the bug affected his account

A Twitter security glitch left celebrities and members of the public mourning the temporary loss of their legions of online fans yesterday.

The technical flaw, which allowed any Twitter user to force another to subscribe to their ‘tweets’ without the ‘follower’ giving permission, was discovered by staff yesterday.

If activated by hackers it would have led to the social networking site’s members being bombarded by ‘spammers’ and approaches from unsavoury users.

Scores of celebrities who rely on the site to update the world on their everyday activities temporarily lost their hordes of followers after staff sought to close the loophole, and were forced to reset the entire system.

Twitter’s millions of account holders wasted no time in reacting to the meltdown of one of the most popular forums on the web, dubbing the problem: ‘The Day Twitter Exploded’.

U.S. singer and teen heart-throb Justin Bieber tweeted:

‘So I woke up here in LA and Twitter has been hacked. Turns out I am no longer popular.’

He went on: ‘Hackers, I send a warning … u have now *****d off over 2 million teenage girls. They are more dangerous than Navy Seals.’

Hollywood’s most powerful tweeting couple, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, also weighed in to the debate.

Kutcher, who was one of the first users to amass a million followers, said: ‘Twitter is being hacked. Ha ha, I have 0 followers,’ while his wife Demi tweeted that the hacker ‘is really doing a number on Twitter. Wow!’

Prolific tweeter Stephen Fry wrote: ‘Do you know, I was sure I had more followers than that. Must’ve imagined it.’

Radio 1 presenter Fearne Cotton tweeted: ‘Trying not to break a leg. 0 followers and a broken leg in 1 day would suck. What’s going on with Twitter?’

The problem with the site was rectified within a few hours and tweeters’ 'followers’ were reinstated.

Stuart Miles, editor of pocket-lint.com, the UK’s largest independent technology site, said: ‘Twitter has had lots of teething problems but I think this is just a blip.’
