Talk to the hand: Lindsay Lohan kept well away from her former friend Paris Hilton last night at the Chopard private party at the Cannes Film Festival


Organisers have been trying to keep them apart all week.

But last night arch-rivals Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan's paths came perilously close to crossing as they both attended the same event at the Cannes Film Festival.

Paris and her family arrived halfway through Lionel Richie's set at jewellers Chopard's 150th birthday party, with Lohan having rolled up just minutes earlier

But sources told MailOnline that the pair - who have been at loggerheads for the past five years - stayed at opposite sides of the venue.

Both have been partying separately around the French Riviera for the past few days and have been keen to avoid each other.

However, it seems neither were prepared to turn down an invite to last night's exclusive event.

Paris, 29, arrived with an entourage of six in tow, including younger sister Nicky, brother Barron and parents Richard and Kathy.

The newly single socialite, who recently split with boyfriend Doug Reinhardt, dressed in a strapless, plunging blue gown, while Lohan, 23, donned a short white dress with silver-coloured shoulder accessories.


Paris did not only have to worry about a potentially embarrassing public spat with Lindsay, however.


Star guest Lionel is, of course, the father of Paris's on-off friend Nicole Ritchie, who she partnered with in the U.S. reality show The Simple Life.

Relations have also cooled between Nicole and Paris over the years - although things didn't get as bitchy as they did between Miss Hilton and Miss Lohan.

The pair have come to blows over various issues, most notably when Lohan began hanging around with one of Paris's ex boyfriends, Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos back in 2005.

Paris was also caught laughing in a video recording with oil heir Brandon Davis in 2006, who made lewd remarks about the colour of Lindsay's pubic hair.

However, issues aside, Lionel proved the toast of Cannes last night as he played a special performance.

Other guests included Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, Marion Cotillard, Kate Beckinsale, Myleene Klass and Sir Phillip Green.

The big name stars enjoyed Richie’s show from a exclusive balcony overlooking the stage at the trendy VIP Rooms on the famous Croisette.

Richie appeared on stage just after midnight to cheers from the crowd – made up of industry leaders from film, fashion and business.

Introduced by Miss Klass as a ‘hero’, the veteran singer belted out many of his solo classics as well anthems by The Commadores such as Easy Like Sunday Morning, Dancing On The Ceiling, and Hello.

The 60 year old star, who has sold more than 100 million records worldwide across a career spanning four decades, was in high spirits as he entertained the upmarket crowd.

He shouted out to the audience: ‘This is going to be so good. Everyone knows the lyrics. I want you all to sing along. I love it when everyone is out of control.’

Miss Campbell could be seen dancing on the balcony with her Russian oligarch boyfriend Vladimir Doronin.

The supermodel will celebrate her 40th birthday with a party in Cannes later this week.

The couple danced next to Sir Phillip who was accompanied by his 19-year-old daughter Chloe and her friends.

The billionaire businessman did not seem keen on dancing or singing along to any of the songs.

Richie performed for a little over an hour before Madonna's beau Jesus Luz took over as DJ.

The 22-year-old model is building his reputation as a disc jockey and has played in nightclubs around the world.

With their love for the social scene, no doubt Lindsay and Paris would have been well up for a boogie.

Maybe they could have settled their differences with a dance-off - that really would have been murder on the dance floor.
