Gone shopping: Simon Cowell and his make-up artist girlfriend headed out for a couple's shopping trip in Malibu yesterday

Simon Cowell has been the butt of many a joke due to his serious lack of style.
His high-waisted trousers became a national joke, and the flat-top hairstyle is long past its sell by date.

But with a 36-year-old fiancée to please, it seems the X Factor judge, 50, may be about to buck up his ideas.

Cowell and American Idol make-up artist Mezhgan (pronounced Mish-gone) enjoyed an afternoon shopping at designer store John Varvatos in ritzy Malibu.

The store, owned by ex-Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein designer Varvatos stocks high end contemporary menswear - a T-shirt alone costs £50

And maybe Mezhgan, who is set to become the first Mrs Cowell, is keen to expand the X Factor judge's sartorial horizons.

She trawled the rails picking out a colourful red sweater, and stood by to give her approval as he tried on sunglasses and sniffed a men's fragrance.

Cowell and Mezhgan arrived in the millionaire's Bentley convertible for the trip to Malibu from his home in Los Angeles.

The couple took a stroll through Cross Creek shopping area, where they posed with fans and even bumped in the host of the U.S., version of quiz show Deal Or No Deal, Howie Mandel.

Cowell and Mezhgan have been inseparable of late, and he even shared a very public display of affection with the make-up artist on chat show Jay Leno.

On the show he was asked if rumours that he was engaged were true, and he admitted: ' Well, I do have somebody in my life now, Jay, yes. And I kinda made a decision this year to make somebody happy.'

Despite his apparent coyness, Cowell's decision to appear on Leno's show with Miss Hussainy, 36, shows he wants this to be a very public affair.

Cowell, 50, proposed to her on Valentine's Day and gave her a £250,000 diamond engagement ring.

Asked whether they would marry this summer, Cowell said only that he wanted a wedding 'in the next ten years'.

Cowell refused to disclose on an American chat show this week how he proposed to Mezhgan.

Meanwhile, Cowell's ex girlfriend Terri Seymour, who famously split from the X Factor judge because of his reluctance to marry and have children has given her blessing to the upcoming union.

Seymour crossed paths with the X Factor judge and his new love at Elton John's post-Oscars AIDS Foundation party recently.

And the TV presenter, who split from Cowell in 2008 after six years together, even said she hopes to be invited to the wedding.

She told the Daily Mirror: 'I'm so happy for him - I'm delighted for them both.
'It's great to see Simon so happy. There's absolutely no awkwardness between me and him.'
